The Lagos State Chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) recently embarked on a crucial mission to educate market traders and shoppers on the dangers of cholera and its prevention. Led by Chairperson Dr. Adeola Ekine, the team visited Ogba Multipurpose Shopping Complex and Alhaja Habibatu Mogaji Day and Sunday Market, two of the busiest markets in Lagos State.
The advocacy and sensitization program aimed to enlighten the public on the recent cholera outbreak and the essential measures to prevent its spread. Dr. Ekine emphasized the importance of proper hygiene, including handwashing after using the restroom, ensuring food safety, and maintaining a clean environment. She stressed that individual actions can make a significant difference in preventing the spread of cholera.
The NAWOJ team distributed pamphlets and posters with illustrations on cholera prevention and control, engaging with market leaders, vendors, and shoppers. They urged food vendors and meat sellers to cover their wares with nets to prevent flies from contaminating them. The Iyaloja of both markets, Ganiyatu Kasumu and Chief Folashade Salako, expressed gratitude to NAWOJ for their outreach and pledged to take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their environment.
The market leaders committed to advocating for a clean and cholera-free environment, joining forces with NAWOJ and the government. Chief Folashade Salako announced that the market has scheduled a fumigation day, and the visit from NAWOJ is a welcome support. The program demonstrated NAWOJ’s dedication to promoting public health and well-being, supporting government efforts to curb the spread of cholera in Lagos State.
Through this initiative, NAWOJ hopes to inspire individuals to take responsibility for their health and environment, ultimately creating a safer and healthier community for all. By working together, we can prevent the spread of cholera and other diseases, ensuring a brighter future for generations to come.
