The Inspector General of Police (IGP) has issued a directive for severe disciplinary actions against any officers found guilty of extorting Nigerians. This measure is part of a broader initiative to restore public confidence in the police force and address widespread allegations of corruption.

The announcement has drawn mixed public reactions. While some commend the IGP’s stance on accountability, others believe corruption runs deep within the police ranks. Some citizens allege that officers face daily “returns” targets set by higher-ups, fueling unethical practices across the force.

Despite government efforts to improve police welfare, reports of roadblock extortion and other forms of bribery continue. Many Nigerians argue that true reform requires addressing corruption throughout the ranks, not just punishing individual officers. The IGP’s directive has sparked a renewed call for transparent, systemic changes to ensure that the force upholds integrity and earns the trust of the public.
