Residents of Abudu community in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area, Ogun State, staged a protest at the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) office over prolonged power outages.

The community, home to over 30 neighborhoods, has been without electricity for more than five years, leaving businesses in ruins and livelihoods severely impacted. Speaking for the group, Mr. Abdusalami Yusuf described the situation as devastating, noting that many homes have been abandoned.

“We have been in darkness for over five years, and our businesses have collapsed,” Yusuf said.

Mrs. Adebayo Rebecca added, “Our lives have been upended, yet we are still billed monthly. This is unfair.”

Despite their frustrations, residents maintained a peaceful stance. Mr. Ogunnusi Niyi said, “We have remained civil, but our goodwill has not been matched by action.”

Responding to the protesters, IBEDC technical engineer Mr. Waheed Lawal assured them that efforts were underway to resolve the crisis. He revealed plans to install necessary equipment and promised that power restoration would be completed within two weeks.

Lawal also invited community leaders to inspect the ongoing project, urging patience while work continues.

Though cautiously optimistic, the residents pledged to monitor progress closely to ensure the issue is resolved as promised.
