In a major step toward sustainable water access, LG Electronics has donated the first-ever solar-powered borehole to the University of Benin (UNIBEN), easing the institution’s long-standing water supply challenges.
The project, officially commissioned on January 23, 2025, was celebrated by university officials, LG representatives, student leaders, and hostel residents. The borehole, running entirely on solar energy, is expected to provide clean, uninterrupted water to thousands of students and staff, reducing reliance on the national grid and cutting utility costs.
Speaking at the event, LG Electronics Nigeria’s Corporate Marketing Manager, Mr. Paul Mba, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to sustainability. “At LG Electronics, we believe in using technology to improve lives. This solar-powered borehole is not just about providing water; it’s about creating a future where renewable energy meets basic needs,” he said.
UNIBEN’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Edoba Omoregie, represented by Prof. Fred Ekhaise, lauded LG’s intervention, describing it as a game-changer for the campus. “Access to clean water is essential for both academic and residential life. This solar-powered solution ensures reliability while promoting environmental responsibility. We deeply appreciate LG Electronics for this generous contribution,” he stated.
Students welcomed the initiative, with Student Union Government (SUG) President, Agboola Israel Timilehin, noting its impact. “Water shortages have been a persistent challenge, especially during peak hours. This borehole will make a huge difference, and since it runs on solar energy, power outages won’t disrupt supply,” he remarked.
Like Oliver Twist, UNIBEN students are asking for more. They urged LG Electronics to extend similar projects to other hostels, ensuring wider access to clean water.
Dean of Students’ Affairs, Prof. Clement Ighodaro, also expressed gratitude, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the facility. He encouraged LG to continue supporting the university, noting that such partnerships enhance the learning environment.
LG Electronics, known for its community-driven sustainability projects, has reinforced its role as a responsible corporate citizen with this donation. UNIBEN now joins a growing list of institutions leveraging renewable energy for essential services, setting a precedent for green innovations in Nigeria’s education sector.
