The Department of Medical Laboratory Science, College of Medicine, (CMUL) University of Lagos, (UNILAG) on Thursday in Lagos inducted inducted 45 medical laboratory scientists.
The Provost, Prof. Ademola Oremosu who in his address celebrated the inductees for their excellence, said that 12 persons graduated with distinction in the
8th medical laboratory science induction and award ceremony.
“The laboratory scientists has a great future, the reality was that diseases are emerging and continued to challenge us.
“So the laboratory scientists is very critical in producing the results that other professionals would rely upon in order to manage people from their disease conditions.
“There are different specialties in the laboratory scientists like chemical pathology, hematology among others.
“So every aspect of our body produces things that could be studied and analyse for disease conditions and that was the reason the laboratory scientists have a great future” Oremosu said.
The guest lecturer, Dr Anyanwu Okechukwu, Chairman, DCL Laboratory Products Limited said that local production area was a virgin area that many people don’t want to go into because there was a lot to clear out of the road.
Okechukwu said that to even understand the procedure, foreign consultants needs to be involved and showed you the process from the scratch.
He said it involves building things that you have no knowledge about and building local capabilities which was not just about to make money but about national development.
Okechukwu who noted that there are many laboratories in Nigeria charged the inductees to come together, pulled resources together to establish a mega Laboratory where they would contribute their quota.
Also, Dr Ashimedea Uchuno, Director, Scientists Regulation and Discipline, Medical Science Council, Nigeria said that CMUL, UNILAG has always kept to the quota given by medical science council.
Uchuno said that so far Nigeria has produced about 47,000 laboratory scientists but 20,000 have left the shores of the country.
