Olugbuyiro Akinola, a seasoned legal practitioner with expertise in tax law, litigation, and public policy, has been sworn in as a Commissioner of the Tax Appeal Tribunal (TAT). His appointment signals the federal government’s push to strengthen Nigeria’s tax dispute resolution framework and drive fiscal justice reforms.

The move aligns with the government’s broader strategy to institutionalize competent leadership in economic governance. The Ministry of Finance has reiterated its commitment to a transparent and modernized tax system, a crucial step toward achieving Nigeria’s sustainable development goals.

Akinola, who previously served as the state legal adviser for LACO FS, brings over 27 years of legal experience. His expertise is expected to reinforce the Tribunal’s mandate of ensuring fair, efficient, and transparent tax dispute resolutions.

According to the TAT, his role will be pivotal in advancing ongoing reforms, including process digitization and case backlog reduction. The Tribunal also emphasized that his appointment will support the government’s drive to enhance tax administration, boost revenue generation, and foster a business-friendly environment.

Wale Edun, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, presided over the swearing-in ceremony in Abuja. The event was attended by dignitaries, including former Ondo State commissioners Saka Yusuf Ogunleye and Rasheed Badmus, as well as traditional leaders such as Deji Owolabi, the Ajafogun of Ita-Ogbolu, and Mayowa Gbalaja, the Onibedo of Ita-Ogbolu.

Commenting on the appointment, Edun stated:

“Akinola’s profound expertise in tax jurisprudence and dedication to public service make him an invaluable asset to the Tribunal. His appointment reaffirms this administration’s commitment to a tax system anchored in fairness, efficiency, and accountability. We are confident that his leadership will strengthen stakeholder trust in Nigeria’s fiscal governance.”

In response, Akinola expressed gratitude for the appointment and pledged to strengthen collaboration with stakeholders.

“I am deeply honored to serve Nigeria in this capacity. I will uphold the principles of justice and integrity in tax dispute resolution, ensuring the Tribunal remains a beacon of equity for both taxpayers and the government. My focus will be on expediting resolutions, leveraging technology, and fostering stakeholder engagement,” he stated.

The Tax Appeal Tribunal plays a critical role in Nigeria’s economic framework by adjudicating disputes between taxpayers and tax authorities, safeguarding taxpayer rights, promoting compliance, and reducing litigation burdens on conventional courts. Akinola’s appointment is expected to further these objectives, reinforcing the Tribunal’s role in Nigeria’s evolving fiscal landscape.
