Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to adopting the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) to ensure a sustainable pension system for state employees.

During a meeting with the Director General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), Ms. Omolola Oloworaran, in Abuja on February 27, 2025, Governor Buni emphasized the need to transition from the Defined Benefits Scheme (DBS) to the more structured CPS. The discussion focused on key steps required for the transition, including legislative backing, remittance compliance, and addressing pension arrears.

Governor Buni highlighted the long-term benefits of the CPS, stating that its implementation would enhance retirees’ financial security, reduce pension arrears, and ensure a stable pension system. He also stressed the importance of stakeholder sensitization to facilitate a smooth transition.

Ms. Oloworaran briefed the Governor on the CPS framework and the need for timely remittances and actuarial valuation to address past service liabilities. She commended Governor Buni’s proactive approach, particularly his efforts to clear outstanding pension arrears.

As a key outcome of the meeting, Governor Buni assured that his administration would enact a robust pension law and establish the necessary structures for CPS implementation. He also pledged support for pre-retirement training programs to prepare civil servants for life after service.

PenCom, in turn, pledged technical support to ensure a smooth transition to the CPS in Yobe State.
