The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has signed a major gas supply agreement with Ssonic Petroleum Ltd to support the development of a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plant in the Lekki Free Trade Zone, Lagos State.
The deal, executed through NNPC Gas Marketing Ltd (NGML) and its joint venture partner, NIPCO Gas Ltd, will see the NGML-NIPCO partnership supply 80 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscf/d) of natural gas to Ssonic Petroleum’s LNG facility for 20 years. The agreement was officially signed on March 6, 2025.
This move is part of NNPC Ltd’s broader strategy to expand domestic gas utilization, drive industrial growth, and promote gas as a cleaner and more affordable energy source. The initiative aligns with Nigeria’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and fostering sustainable economic development.
Industry experts see this agreement as a boost for Nigeria’s gas sector, which has gained momentum in recent years as the country seeks to maximize its vast natural gas reserves. The planned LNG facility in Lekki is expected to contribute significantly to energy availability, job creation, and overall economic expansion.
With global energy transition efforts accelerating, Nigeria’s gas development initiatives are seen as critical to ensuring a sustainable and diversified energy mix. The NNPC Ltd’s commitment to long-term gas supply deals further reinforces its role in driving Nigeria’s gas revolution
