The Ogun State House of Assembly has called on the ‘Stop Crime Team Nigeria,’ a police initiative against cultism, to extend its advocacy efforts to schools, communities, and government agencies to curb the rising menace of cultism among youths.
Speaker Oludaisi Elemide made the appeal while receiving the team, led by Assistant Commissioner of Police Olabisi Okuwobi, at the Assembly Complex in Abeokuta. Lawmakers identified poor parenting and peer influence as key drivers of cult-related crimes, even at the primary school level.
Okuwobi emphasized that most criminals traced their roots to cult groups, highlighting the need for community-driven renunciation, disarmament, and rehabilitation efforts. The lawmakers commended the initiative for prioritizing advocacy over force.
Meanwhile, the Speaker also met with the leadership of the Ogun State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to discuss collaborative efforts in welfare and empowerment programs.
