The Kwara State Health Insurance Agency (KWHIA) will begin enrolling individuals living with Tuberculosis (TB) and HIV/AIDS into its health insurance scheme from June 12, 2025. The announcement was made by the Executive Secretary of the agency, Dr. Olubunmi Jetawo-Winter, during a stakeholder meeting in Ilorin.
According to Jetawo-Winter, the move is aimed at closing critical healthcare gaps for people living with HIV and TB across the state’s 16 Local Government Areas. She explained that while many of them currently benefit from donor-funded disease-specific programs, they lack coverage for broader health issues such as malaria, surgery, or maternal care.
“These individuals are immunocompromised and are more vulnerable to other illnesses. We are integrating them into the state scheme so they can access holistic care,” she said.
The enrollment will take place at the health facilities where beneficiaries currently receive their TB and HIV treatments. The scheme will be renewable annually, ensuring continuous coverage for eligible individuals.
A member of the House of Representatives Committee on Health and Environment, Seun Ogunniyi, commended the initiative and urged the agency to ensure proper orientation and implementation across the state.
KWHIA operates under the “Kwara Care” platform and provides three major plans: the Informal Plan for artisans and self-employed persons, the Formal Plan for workers, and the Equity Plan for low-income and vulnerable groups.
The agency recently opened three regional offices in the state to scale up enrollment and improve access to healthcare.
