The Nigeria Police Force has declared five men wanted for allegedly engaging in homosexual activity, which is a criminal offence under Nigerian law punishable by up to 14 years in prison.

According to a police statement, the individuals — Azeez Olasunkanmi Fowosere, Olajide Abe, Samuel Chukwuka Ateweh, and Sunday Olayemi Afolayan — were reportedly caught in the act by members of their community before fleeing the scene.

“We have carried out a thorough investigation and confirmed the allegations to be true. Unfortunately, the suspects escaped during attempts to apprehend them,” the police said. “We urge anyone with useful information about their whereabouts to contact the nearest police station.”

Homosexuality remains illegal in Nigeria, where same-sex relationships are criminalised under the Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act.
