Union Bank of Nigeria, through its UnionCares initiative, has sponsored a mathematics competition for hearing-impaired students, reinforcing its commitment to inclusive education. The event, organised in collaboration with the Ajofa Special Education Foundation for the Deaf, took place at Wesley School for the Hearing Impaired, Surulere, Lagos, under the theme: “Impacting Deaf Students and Life with Mathematics in Nigeria.”
Ten students from various schools for the hearing impaired competed, showcasing their academic abilities before representatives from Union Bank, the Lagos State Education Board, school principals, and teachers.
Union Bank’s Chief Brand and Marketing Officer, Olufunmilola Aluko, described the competition as a powerful statement about inclusion. “These students are not defined by their circumstances. They are thinkers and problem-solvers. Through UnionCares, we’re proud to support platforms that help them thrive,” she said.
Founder of the Ajofa Foundation, Francis Ajomiwe, expressed gratitude to Union Bank for helping bring the competition to life. “We remain committed to advancing education in the deaf community through targeted programmes like this,” he said via an interpreter.
Bukunola Famakinwa, representing the Lagos State Education Authority, stressed the importance of inclusive support. “With the right tools and support, deaf learners can excel in mathematics and every aspect of life,” she said.
Winners—Samuel Megbodofo, Tomilola Shonubi, and Opeoluwa Saka—received prizes from Union Bank, along with branded gifts for all participants and teachers.
