In a strategic move to reposition Nigeria’s urban economy, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, has stressed the critical role of land reforms in driving job creation, boosting state revenue, and attracting private investment into urban renewal.
Edun made the statement in Abuja on Wednesday during a high-level meeting with the African Regional Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), Mr. Mathias Spaliviero, and his delegation. The meeting focused on accelerating land titling, spatial planning, and sustainable urban development in Nigeria.

According to the Minister, reforms in land administration are key to creating investable cities, enabling structured development, and fostering effective public-private partnerships in infrastructure, housing, logistics, and agriculture.

“The Federal Government is committed to land reforms that unlock the economic potential of cities. By improving documentation and security of tenure, we can expand the tax base and catalyze investments into sectors critical to job creation and economic growth,” Edun said.

UN-Habitat expressed support for the Nigeria Land Titling and Documentation Programme, reaffirming its role in improving land security, enhancing fiscal capacity, and promoting climate-resilient urban planning.

The visit marks a significant step in Nigeria’s collaboration with global development agencies to transform its cities into engines of inclusive growth.
