A resident of Ogun State, Mr. Oluwo Azeez, has raised the alarm over persistent threats from family members following his refusal to subject his daughter—born in June 2022—to female circumcision.
Mr. Azeez said that since the child’s birth, he and his wife have been under pressure from relatives to carry out the harmful practice, which they have firmly rejected. Despite clearly communicating their decision, the threats have reportedly persisted and now include the use of charms and spiritual intimidation.

“This has been ongoing for months. My wife and I made our refusal known, yet the intimidation hasn’t stopped. We fear for our safety and that of our daughter,” he stated.
He further noted that the situation is becoming increasingly dangerous and called for urgent intervention to prevent harm to his family.
The case has been formally reported to the Ogun State Police Command, which has confirmed receipt of the complaint and commenced investigations.
“We have launched an investigation into the reported threats. Anyone found guilty of intimidation or attempting to enforce illegal cultural practices will be held accountable under the law,” said SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, Police Public Relations Officer, Ogun State.
In reaction to the case, the Ogun State Ministry of Youth and Sports reaffirmed the government’s zero-tolerance policy on female genital mutilation (FGM).
Mrs. Abiola Ogunbiyi, Director of Gender and Youth Development at the Ministry, said, “The Ogun State Government remains committed to protecting children’s rights and eradicating FGM. We are working with law enforcement and civil society groups to eliminate such practices. We urge community members to speak out and support affected families.”
Also responding, the Ogun State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development condemned the threats and pledged support to the family.
Speaking on behalf of the Ministry, Mrs. Funmilayo Wakama, Director of Child Welfare, stated:
“FGM is a serious violation of human rights and a threat to the health and future of the girl-child. We are actively working across the state to raise awareness, enforce child protection laws, and support families who resist harmful traditions. This case will not be ignored. Our team stands ready to offer social, legal, and psychological support.”
Human rights advocates have expressed concern over the incident, calling for more robust community-based campaigns and stronger legal enforcement to end FGM.
Despite the involvement of the police, state ministries, and non-governmental organizations, female circumcision remains a challenge—particularly in rural and underserved communities—highlighting the deep cultural roots of the practice and the need for sustained public education and protection mechanisms.
The public is encouraged to report similar cases and support efforts aimed at protecting the rights and dignity of children across the state.
