As part of efforts to promote health awareness and knowledge sharing within the pension industry, the Pension Fund Operators Association of Nigeria (PenOp) has organized a cancer awareness session targeted at young professionals.
The two-hour Knowledge Sharing Session (KSS) focused on sensitizing participants to the risks of cervical and prostate cancers, while emphasizing the importance of early detection and preventive healthcare. The session was facilitated by medical expert Dr. Oluwatimilehin, who provided practical insights into the causes, prevention, and early warning signs of cancer.
Dr. Oluwatimilehin began the session by explaining the difference between malignant and benign tumors and urged participants to prioritize their health by going for regular checkups, especially working professionals who may overlook preventive care due to busy schedules.
Speaking on cervical cancer, he noted that it is the second most common cancer among women globally and is largely caused by high-risk HPV infections. He advised the adoption of preventive measures such as childhood vaccination, regular Pap smear tests, safe sex practices, and healthy living.
On prostate cancer, he explained that although the disease often progresses slowly, it can become life-threatening if undetected. He cited factors such as age, genetics, and lifestyle as significant risks and encouraged men to go for regular Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) tests and Digital Rectal Exams (DREs), particularly from age 40 or earlier if they fall into high-risk categories.
The session also addressed common myths, including the widespread belief that frequent sexual activity prevents prostate cancer. Dr. Oluwatimilehin clarified that while natural remedies and good lifestyle habits are beneficial, they should never replace proper medical diagnosis and treatment.
Participants actively engaged during the Q&A segment, raising concerns on topics such as genetic predisposition, cancer treatment options, and the importance of routine breast cancer screenings. The facilitator also spoke about the role of genetic testing and comprehensive annual health checks for both men and women.
The session closed with a strong call to action on the need for awareness, early detection, and commitment to preventive health. PenOp reiterated its dedication to the well-being of its members, stressing that safeguarding the health of professionals is critical to sustaining the productivity and resilience of the industry.
