The West African Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP), Southeast Nigeria, has condemned the brutal killing of thirteen Ebonyi indigenes in Ogboji Community, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The tragic incident, which occurred on the evening of Monday, July 1, 2025, has sparked grief and outrage across the Southeast region. WANEP expressed deep sorrow over the killings and called for a swift, independent, and transparent investigation to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
In a statement released in Anambra, the organization urged authorities and stakeholders, including traditional leaders, security agencies, and state governments, to work together to prevent further violence. WANEP also expressed solidarity with the families of the victims and called on residents to remain calm and vigilant.
WANEP recommends a series of urgent steps to address the crisis and prevent a recurrence. These include a full-scale investigation by the Anambra State Government and federal security agencies, improved inter-state security coordination between Ebonyi and Anambra, and structured community dialogue involving traditional rulers, youth, women, and civil society groups. The group also called for increased deployment of security personnel to vulnerable border areas, proactive resolution of root causes like land disputes and marginalization, and the establishment of joint community peace committees.
The group emphasized the importance of activating early warning and response systems to detect threats before they escalate. It also urged the government to provide adequate compensation and psychosocial support to families of the deceased.
