The Federal Government has approved the long-delayed pensions for retired aviation workers, offering long-overdue relief to thousands who served in Nigeria’s aviation sector, particularly those from defunct national carriers.

This development marks a significant victory for union leaders and retirees who have spent years lobbying for recognition and justice. Their consistent advocacy appears to have finally paid off, as the government moved to address a major grievance that has lingered in the sector for decades.

The Ministry of Aviation confirmed that disbursement processes will commence shortly, adding that the payment exercise will be carried out with full transparency and accountability. No specific timeline has been provided, but officials say necessary verifications are already underway.

Industry stakeholders have welcomed the development, describing it as a long-overdue measure to restore the dignity of former aviation workers and rebuild trust in the system.

“This move gives hope, not just to those who served but to those currently in service, that the system can work,” one aviation union leader remarked.

The approval is expected to boost morale across the industry and may signal renewed attention to pension obligations in other sectors as well.
