The National Pension Commission (PenCom) has intensified efforts to enhance the welfare of police officers under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) with a renewed partnership with the Nigeria Police Force.
PenCom’s Director General, Ms Omolola Oloworaran, led a high-level delegation to meet the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, at Force Headquarters, Abuja. The session, which also involved senior police officials and the management of NPF Pensions Limited, focused on resolving pension-related concerns and improving retirement benefits.
Ms Oloworaran expressed appreciation for the sacrifices of police officers and stressed the importance of collaboration to strengthen the CPS rather than exiting it. She highlighted proposed reforms, including a Health Insurance Scheme for retirees, increasing monthly pensions to 75% of final salary, expanding the Retirement Resettlement Fund, and revamping the police pension framework.
She also called for the Federal Government to raise its pension contribution for police officers from 10% to 20%, and announced plans for a new Gratuity Scheme from 2026 that will grant treasury-funded federal workers one year’s total emoluments at retirement.
Responding, IGP Egbetokun lauded PenCom’s initiatives and pledged the Police Force’s commitment to constructive engagement in resolving pension issues. Both sides agreed to sustain dialogue and reform efforts to ensure police officers retire with dignity and financial security.
