Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has approved the immediate release of N10 billion to offset outstanding pension arrears owed retirees in the state.
The governor made the announcement in Asaba during a meeting with the Chairman, Bureau of State Pensions, Mr. Edwin Ogidi-Gbegbaje, and the State Chairman of the Association of Contributory Retirees, Mr. Anthony Osanekwu. He explained that the move was aimed at addressing pension backlogs and easing migration challenges under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
Since assuming office, Oborevwori said his administration has paid over N36 billion in pensions, with N1.4 billion released monthly to sustain obligations. He noted that while his government has not defaulted in monthly payments, arrears inherited from previous administrations must be urgently cleared.
“Retirees are men and women who gave their best years in service to the state. It is only just that they receive what is due to them, and under my watch, their welfare will remain a top priority,” he said.
To ensure transparency, the governor announced the constitution of an oversight team to monitor the implementation of the N10 billion release.
Reacting, Ogidi-Gbegbaje described the announcement as a “pleasant surprise” and assured that the funds would be used exclusively for pension payments. Osanekwu also commended the governor, saying the gesture far exceeded the expectations of retirees and would bring huge relief across the state.
The initiative, Oborevwori stressed, reaffirms his administration’s commitment to prioritising the welfare of senior citizens.
