The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared that its members will suspend academic activities today as the union begins a nationwide strike action disguised as rallies.

At a press briefing in Oye-Ekiti on Monday, Zonal Coordinator, Adeola Oyebisi Egbedokun, said the decision followed the Federal Government’s continued failure to meet the union’s long-standing demands.

Egbedokun explained that the rallies across universities mark ASUU’s first coordinated step towards a full-blown shutdown of campuses nationwide. He warned that the action signals what is to come if the government remains unyielding.

The ASUU leadership also stated that the National Executive Council (NEC) has set August 28 as the deadline for the government to respond, stressing that failure to do so would trigger more decisive measures.

“For over two years, we have restrained ourselves in the interest of dialogue. But our patience is exhausted. If the government continues to gamble with the future of our universities, it must be ready for the consequences,” Egbedokun said.
