Industry experts have called for deeper adoption of innovation, clean energy, and sustainability as the cornerstone for the growth and transformation of Nigeria’s transportation and logistics sector.
Speaking at the 2025 Transportation Correspondents Association of Nigeria (TCAN) Annual Summit held in Lagos on Wednesday, stakeholders stressed that the future of Nigeria’s economy hinges on an efficient, technology-driven, and environmentally friendly transport system. The summit had the theme “Driving the Transport Logistics Value Chains for Economic Growth.”
Programme Director of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG), Mr. Michael Oluwagbemi, represented by Mrs. Ugonna Onyemelukwe, said unlocking economic growth requires transport systems that are effective, affordable, and sustainable.
“This is where the Presidential CNG Initiative comes in — to accelerate Nigeria’s transition from petrol and diesel to CNG, and provide Nigerians, especially those in the transport and logistics value chains, with cheaper, cleaner, and safer energy alternatives,” Oluwagbemi said.
He disclosed that Pi-CNG had begun rolling out conversion centres, training programmes, and fueling infrastructure nationwide. According to him, powering buses, trucks, taxis, and even motorcycles with CNG could slash logistics costs, cut emissions, and boost competitiveness.
“For Nigeria’s logistics value chain, this presents a historic opportunity. Imagine fleets of cargo trucks moving goods from our ports to inland cities on CNG — reducing costs and environmental footprints while enhancing efficiency. This is not a distant dream; it is a future we are building together,” he added.
On his part, Managing Director of Lagos Computerised Vehicle Inspection Service (LACVIS), Mr. Segun Obayendo, represented by Mrs. Abike Awojobi, said the transport and logistics industry must embrace efficiency, innovation, and sustainability to become a true driver of Nigeria’s economic prosperity.
He noted that LACVIS is committed to ensuring safer roads through reliable and technology-driven vehicle inspections, aligning with the summit’s objective of strengthening the transport ecosystem.
“We remain committed to working with industry players, regulators, and policymakers to enhance safety standards, promote professionalism, and foster growth in Nigeria’s transport and logistics sector,” Obayendo stated.
The experts jointly urged greater collaboration among stakeholders, emphasising that innovation and sustainability must underpin all solutions as Nigeria works to build a modern, resilient transport system capable of powering long-term economic growth.
