Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo has warned local authorities in Anambra State to stop collecting levies from petty traders, especially those whose businesses are worth less than ₦100,000.

Speaking at a large rally in Ekwulobia, the Governor said his government would arrest anyone who goes against this directive. His warning followed his visit to Eke Market in Awgbu, where he found that some traders were still being charged illegal fees.

“Don’t collect from them anymore,” Soludo said. “We will arrest anybody that disregards this order.”

The rally, which drew a huge crowd of supporters, doubled as a show of support for Soludo’s re-election bid. The Governor thanked the people of Ekwulobia, calling their support “a people’s movement.”

He noted that although Ekwulobia was listed among the cities planned for development, it had long been neglected. He promised to create a special committee on town planning to ensure its growth into a modern city.

Soludo also highlighted his government’s social welfare programmes, including free education, free antenatal care, and delivery services for the poor.

Community leaders praised the Governor’s performance. Chief Joseph Okafor said, “In just three years, you have achieved great things not only in Aguata but across Anambra.”

The Mayor of Aguata LGA, Dr. Chibueze Offorbike, added, “You have transformed us from a rural area to an urban one. We are proud of your work and promise full support.”

At the event, the Ekwulobia community presented a cheque of ₦80 million to Soludo and Deputy Governor Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim to support their campaign.
