The Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Lagos State Branch, has officially welcomed Dr. Mrs. Imedimfon Maria Edwin Okon as its 25th President, in a ceremony marking a new chapter in the association’s history. Fondly referred to as “The Silver President,” Dr. Okon takes the helm with a clear vision to strengthen mentorship, community health, and professional advocacy for women in medicine.
Dr. Okon, a highly accomplished public health physician and administrator, is the Medical Director and Chief Executive Officer of Ibeju-Lekki General Hospital. Her career reflects two decades of dedication to service, mentorship, and leadership within MWAN Lagos, where she has held several key roles since joining the association in 2005.
A graduate of the University of Ilorin with an MBBS, Dr. Okon holds two Master’s degrees in Public Health from the University of Lagos and University of Ibadan. She is a Member of the West African College of Physicians, an Associate Fellow of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, and has completed leadership programmes at the University of Washington, USA.
At Ibeju-Lekki General Hospital, where she currently serves as Medical Drirector and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Okon has driven remarkable improvements, including the establishment of new specialist departments, increased consultant recruitment, and significant growth in antenatal clinic attendance. Her leadership has not only enhanced hospital operations but also strengthened engagement with the local community.
Within MWAN, Dr. Okon has a distinguished track record. She has served as Publicity Secretary, State Secretary-General, National Coordinator of Outreaches, International Director of Public Relations at the Medical Women International Association (MWIA), and Chair of major Biennial Conferences. Her unwavering commitment to mentorship, community health, and professional excellence has earned her national recognition.
In her acceptance speech, Dr. Okon outlined her theme for the 2025–2027 biennium: “THE BRIDGE.” She emphasised her mission to connect generations of medical women, expand community health initiatives, promote mental well-being, and strengthen partnerships with government and private stakeholders to improve maternal and child health outcomes.
Dr. Okon also highlighted the importance of inclusivity, collaboration, and empowerment within MWAN Lagos. She acknowledged the support of her family, mentors, past presidents, and colleagues, describing her presidency as a shared responsibility aimed at advancing the association’s vision of service, excellence, and compassion.
Beyond her medical and professional commitments, Dr. Okon is actively involved in community service as a member of the Rotary Club of Ojodu, District 9111 where she continues to champion initiatives in women’s empowerment, public health education, and social development.
