Multiple award winner Adeola Akinsulure, a Biology teacher at Omole Senior Grammar School, Lagos State, has added another feather to her colourful cap by emerging the First Runner-Up at the 11th edition of the Maltina Teacher of the Year Competition held in Lagos on Friday.

The event, which took place at the Eko Hotel and Suites, was graced by industry leaders and professionals across the education sector.

A total of 2,010 entries were received from across Nigeria; 1,725 met the entry criteria, and 173 advanced to the second phase nationwide.

Akinsulure has transformed her classroom into a dynamic learning environment where students excel and lead in STEM education, positioning them to be globally competitive.

She seamlessly integrates science, business, and education in her teaching. She is the founder of SOAR (Seeking Opportunities and Achievement Readiness), a mentorship initiative that helps students access global opportunities; IGNITE EDD6, a programme that introduces students to robotics, coding, and artificial intelligence; and she has created free digital learning content across social media platforms, expanding access to quality education beyond school hours.

As an advocate for gender equity in education and convener of Confident Girls, Healthy Choices, Adeola has worked tirelessly to empower girls to build confidence and leadership skills. She also authored Glow Girls, a book designed to extend her impact to even more young women. Her students have created award-winning projects, led environmental campaigns, and championed community development initiatives.

To support her colleagues, Adeola founded professional communities such as STEM Collaborators and the KIND Teachers Initiative, through which she has mentored and trained over 20,000 teachers within and outside Nigeria. She is also a Fulbright TEA scholar and serves as a mentor at the New York Academy of Sciences.

With Akinsulure’s emergence as the First Runner-Up at the 11th edition of the Maltina Teacher of the Year Competition, she now joins the prestigious Maltina Teacher Hall of Fame.

The Maltina Teacher of the Year competition is an initiative of the Nigerian Breweries–Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund.
