The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) and the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) have rolled out a strengthened joint safety and security campaign to protect commuters as water transport activities surge this festive season.

The coordinated initiative, announced in Lagos on Monday, is aimed at ensuring safer boat travel, tighter enforcement, and improved collaboration among regulators, operators, and security agencies across the state’s inland waterways.

“Safety on our waterways is not negotiable,” the Special Adviser to the Governor on the Blue Economy said, noting that the partnership enhances enforcement capacity and deepens coordination with the Marine Police, vessel operators, and coastal communities. “This will ensure a secure and joyful festive season for all waterway users.”

Key Safety Measures Unveiled

  • Enhanced Joint Patrols:
LASWA, NIWA, Marine Police, and community volunteers will conduct coordinated patrols along major routes and terminals, especially during rush hours and night movements.
  • Unified Vessel Compliance Checks:
Both agencies will jointly enforce licensing rules, carry out safety inspections on passenger boats, and conduct random spot checks throughout the holidays.
  • Real-Time Weather Monitoring:
Operators and passengers will receive timely safety advisories and possible route adjustments based on changing weather and water conditions.
  • Zero-Alcohol Boarding Policy:
Passengers or crew members exhibiting signs of intoxication will be barred from boarding to prevent avoidable risks.

Expectations for Passengers and Operators

Passengers are urged to wear life jackets properly, obey crew instructions, avoid overloaded boats, supervise children, and quickly report any suspicious or unsafe activity.

Boat operators must maintain valid licenses, ensure updated safety equipment, provide complete passenger manifests, enforce capacity limits, and display emergency contacts clearly.

NIWA’s Lagos Area Manager emphasised shared responsibility: “This season is a time for celebration, and we can only achieve safe and enjoyable travels when everyone—regulators, operators, and passengers—plays their part. Together, we will ensure safe navigation and compliance on all waterways.”

Reporting Emergencies

Commuters can report incidents to LASWA or NIWA officials at terminals or through emergency hotlines displayed at jetties.
