LThe Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare of retirees by distributing welfare packages to pensioners across the state, describing the initiative as a timely intervention to support senior citizens ahead of the festive season.
The distribution exercise, which took place at the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) Auditorium, Alausa, Ikeja, was organised by the Lagos State Pensions Commission (LASPEC). The programme aims to ease the financial pressures often associated with the Yuletide period while demonstrating appreciation for the decades of service contributed by Lagos State public servants.
Speaking at the event, the Head of Service, Mr. Bode Agoro, represented by Bukola Durodola, Director of the Post Service Department, described the initiative as a reflection of the administration’s commitment to honour retirees. He expressed satisfaction at the turnout and wellbeing of the pensioners, describing them as “retired but not tired,” emphasizing their continued vitality and importance to the public service.
Agoro noted that the welfare distribution could not have come at a better time, given the rising cost of living and the festive season’s financial demands. The programme was designed as a two-day exercise, beginning with pensioners in the Ikeja Division, with simultaneous distributions in Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos, and Epe divisions. This decentralised approach ensures equitable access, convenience, and fairness, allowing retirees to benefit without undue stress.
The Head of Service also assured pensioners of the government’s continued focus on prompt pension payments, health initiatives, and other welfare programmes designed to guarantee secure and fulfilling retirement years. He commended LASPEC for the efficient organisation of the exercise and urged retirees to remain orderly, assuring them that every eligible pensioner would be attended to.
Also speaking at the event, LASPEC Director-General, Mr. Babalola Obilana, described the initiative as more than a distribution of items, framing it as a symbolic gesture to honour pensioners for their dedicated service. He highlighted that retirees’ discipline, resilience, and commitment were foundational to the growth of Lagos State public institutions.
Obilana emphasized that the welfare packages, though modest, were meaningful, particularly during the festive season, and stressed that the decentralised model aimed to improve accessibility while reducing the physical burden on elderly pensioners. He linked the initiative to the THEMES+ agenda of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, noting the administration’s consistent prioritisation of prompt pension payments and sustainable welfare policies.
“The goal is a Lagos where every pensioner feels respected, supported, and valued. Retirement years should be a season of rest and reassurance,” Obilana said.
The welfare exercise underscores Lagos State’s ongoing commitment to the dignity, security, and wellbeing of its retirees, ensuring they remain connected and appreciated for their years of service
