Rite on the Beach, a sustainability-driven initiative, has hosted a symposium titled “Access to Resources,” bringing together key stakeholders to address the need for equitable access to environmental, economic, and educational resources as a pathway to sustainable development in Nigeria.

The symposium focused on the growing challenge of plastic waste in coastal communities and explored how environmental problems can be converted into economic opportunities. Discussions centred on transforming plastic waste into viable resources that support livelihoods, education, and community development, while also safeguarding marine ecosystems.

Speakers at the event stressed the importance of strategic partnerships, reliable data, innovation, and inclusive policies in enabling communities—particularly young people and coastal residents—to actively participate in the circular economy. They noted that access to tools, knowledge, and infrastructure is essential for communities to drive their own environmental and economic progress.

Founder of Rite on the Beach, Akintunde Disu, said the initiative is committed to creating value through data-driven solutions and education.

“Our work involves identifying overlooked resources in Lagos, such as plastic bottles on the beach, and converting them into opportunities for economic growth and environmental sustainability,” he said. “Over the past three years, we have removed 30 tons of plastic bottles from beaches, recycled them, and partnered with institutions such as the University of Lagos to develop innovative solutions to plastic pollution.”

The symposium underscored the role of equitable resource access in empowering communities to take ownership of their development and contribute meaningfully to environmental protection and economic growth. Participants agreed that scaling such initiatives through collaboration and innovation is critical to achieving long-term sustainability.

Rite on the Beach reaffirmed its commitment to expanding its impact and called on stakeholders across the public and private sectors to support its mission of promoting sustainability, equity, and inclusive economic growth in Nigeria.

The initiative continues to work towards empowering communities through education, data-driven approaches, and partnerships that foster environmental stewardship and sustainable livelihoods, particularly within coastal areas and among young people
