The Oyo State Government has announced plans to procure over 60,000 laptops for public senior secondary schools as part of preparations for the full adoption of the Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Hon. Olusegun Olayiwola, disclosed this while receiving the Zonal Coordinator and Deputy Registrar of WAEC, Mr. Waheed Amode, and his team during a courtesy visit to his office on Wednesday.
Olayiwola said Governor Seyi Makinde has directed that the cost implications of the procurement be worked out to ensure the state is well positioned for the Federal Government’s gradual transition from pen-and-paper examinations to digital testing. He praised WAEC for measures taken to address challenges recorded during the 2025 examinations and pledged continued collaboration to curb examination malpractice and protect school facilities.
In his remarks, Amode said registration for the 2026 May/June WAEC examination closed on February 2, noting that the exams would be conducted using both CBT and pen-and-paper modes, depending on schools’ readiness. He warned that candidates caught with mobile phones risk severe sanctions, including possible cancellation of results.
The Commissioner also urged parents, teachers and guardians to strengthen cooperation to address moral decline in schools, while stakeholders called for renewed focus on discipline and quality education.
