Effiong Jeremiah Essien, a 27-year-old Nigerian entrepreneur and former professional footballer, has accused Mr. Isumaila Sanusi, a politically influential figure with strong ties to the Ogun State House of Assembly, of orchestrating threats and violent attacks against him after he refused to process a $300,000 cash transaction.
Effiong says the ordeal began in early 2023, when Sanusi allegedly summoned him to a hotel under the protection of armed guards and pressured him to handle the large cash deal. When he refused, he says the politician became hostile and soon after began issuing direct threats, including explicit warnings over the phone.
“My life has been in danger ever since I declined,” Effiong said.
Series of Attacks Across Multiple States
April 7, 2023 – Sagamu, Ogun State:
Armed men stormed his workplace. He narrowly escaped through the back door.
April 18, 2023 – Sagamu:
The same armed group attacked the home of his friend, Adedeji Ogunyemi, where Effiong was hiding. He escaped through a back window and hid in a bush for hours.
December 10, 2023 – Ibadan, Oyo State:
Effiong says he was recognized by the politician’s men at a crowded market in Ibadan. An elderly vendor reportedly hid him behind her stall, preventing him from being captured.
May 2024 – Enugu State:
While staying with a friend, Samuel Onuche, Effiong says he continued receiving threatening calls warning him that he “could not run forever.” He claims the intimidation intensified throughout May, leaving him fearful to move openly or contact authorities.
Impact on His Family
Effiong’s wife, Joy, who is currently pregnant, has also reportedly received threatening phone calls from unknown numbers. Effiong says the intimidation has caused her severe emotional stress and fear, leaving the family in a constant state of anxiety.
“This situation has destroyed our peace,” Effiong said. “My wife lives in fear every day because of the threats.”
Lack of Police Action
Effiong says he attempted to report the threats and earlier attacks to police, but claims officers told him they were unable to act due to the politician’s influence.
“I am speaking out publicly because I fear for my life and the safety of anyone close to me,” he said.
No Response From Authorities
Repeated attempts to contact Mr. Isumaila Sanusi were unsuccessful.
The Ogun State House of Assembly and the Nigerian Police Force have not responded to requests for comment.
