… Pledges Over 50% Food Self-Sufficiency by 2025

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to enhancing food security, aiming to increase Lagos’ self-sufficiency from 18% to over 50% by 2025. During a working visit to the Lagos Central Food Security Systems and Logistics Park (LHP) in Ketu, Ereyun, Epe, the Governor lauded Origin Tech Group for spearheading the transformative initiative.

Set on 220 hectares, the project will become Africa’s largest food logistics hub and the world’s second-largest after France’s Rungis International Market. Designed to revolutionize Lagos’ food ecosystem, the hub will improve accessibility, stabilize prices, and reduce post-harvest losses. Governor Sanwo-Olu announced that the first phase of the facility will be completed by mid-2025, marking a milestone in Lagos’ journey toward food sufficiency.

“This hub represents a pivotal step toward achieving food sufficiency and affordability for Lagosians. By reducing wastage and optimizing supply chains, we aim to stabilize prices and mitigate economic shocks,” the Governor stated.

The Governor also outlined plans to replicate middle-level market hubs in Ajah, Agege, Oregun, and Ikorodu, following the successful launch of the Idi-Oro, Mushin hub last year. These satellite hubs will integrate seamlessly with the central food logistics park, ensuring efficient distribution across Lagos and neighboring communities.

Prince S. J. Samuel, Executive Chairman of Origin Tech Group, praised Governor Sanwo-Olu’s visionary leadership and assured that the project would be delivered before the second anniversary of the Governor’s second term. “This facility is set to reduce food prices by 50%, featuring integrated cold and dry storage, Africa’s largest abattoir, and a jetty for streamlined goods transportation,” Samuel stated.

The hub will boast a 14,000-capacity abattoir, massive dry storage facilities, a 250mm dual carriageway road network, and a jetty for waterway logistics. It is projected to strengthen Lagos’ agricultural value chain, create thousands of jobs, and position Lagos as a leader in sustainable food systems across Sub-Saharan Africa.

Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized, “This initiative is our legacy. It will transform Lagos’ food systems, stabilize prices, and provide Lagosians with the adequacy they deserve.”

The Lagos Central Food Security Systems and Logistics Park represents a benchmark for innovation, sustainable development, and economic growth, solidifying Lagos’ position as an economic powerhouse while addressing critical food security challenges in the region.
