The Federal University Dutse (FUD) has announced the appointment of Professor Ahmed Muhammed Gumel as its 4th substantive Vice-Chancellor, effective 10th February 2026, following approval by the university’s 4th Governing Council at an extraordinary meeting on 13th December 2025.
Professor Shuaibu Oba Abdulraheem, OFR, NPOM, Chairman of the Governing Council, described the selection process as rigorous, noting that 21 candidates were shortlisted and interviewed before Professor Gumel emerged as the new VC. He congratulated Professor Gumel and prayed for divine guidance in his new role.
In his remarks, Professor Gumel thanked Allah for his appointment and expressed gratitude to the Governing Council, the selection team, and the outgoing VC for their confidence. He pledged to build on the achievements of his predecessor and further advance the university’s mission.
Professor Gumel is an alumnus of University of Malaya, Malaysia, where he earned a Master’s in Biotechnology and a Ph.D. in Industrial Biotechnology with specialization in Biocatalysis and Bioprocess Technology. He also served as a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the same institution. His additional qualifications include a Professional Master’s in Public Policy and Administration (MPPA), Advanced Diploma in Education, and certifications in digital and data technologies.
An internationally recognized researcher, Professor Gumel has numerous patents, research grants, and awards, including a distinction for his Ph.D. thesis at the University of Malaya. He is a registered biotechnologist and holds memberships in several global professional organizations, including the Nigeria Society for Biotechnology, European Federation of Biotechnology, Society for Biological Engineering (USA), and the International Institute of Chemical, Biological and Environmental Engineering.
Since joining FUD in 2015, Professor Gumel has held multiple leadership roles, including Head of Department of Microbiology and Biotechnology, Dean of Student Affairs, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Central Administration). Known for his transformational leadership and team-oriented approach, he has received over 34 awards and recognitions for his contributions to academia and the university community.
Professor Gumel has also represented FUD at international conferences and workshops across the USA, China, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Turkey, and Oman, further enhancing the university’s global profile.
