The African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE), a pioneering tertiary medical institution led by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) in collaboration with King’s College Hospital, London, has showcased key construction milestones as it prepares for its grand opening in June 2025.
In a high-profile stakeholder and media tour, AMCE reaffirmed its commitment to transforming Africa’s healthcare landscape through cutting-edge medical services, research, and innovation. The tour featured an exclusive walkthrough of the facility, providing insights into the hospital’s state-of-the-art infrastructure, including its nearly completed interior tiling, vinyl flooring installation, lift system integration, and ongoing external infrastructure development.
A Gathering of Key Stakeholders
The event was led by Prof. Benedict Oramah, President of Afreximbank and Chairman of the AMCE Board, alongside board members and top Nigerian government officials. Distinguished attendees included:
- Senator Barau Jibrin, Deputy Senate President of Nigeria
- Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation
- Mrs. Toyin Saraki, Founder of Wellbeing Foundation Africa
- Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong
- Kabiru Rabiu, Group Executive Director, BUA Group
They were joined by leading corporate executives, medical professionals, and industry leaders, all of whom expressed strong support for AMCE’s mission to redefine healthcare access and reduce medical tourism.
Advancing Healthcare for Africa
With Nigeria losing over $1.1 billion annually to outbound medical tourism, AMCE aims to reverse this trend by offering specialized care in oncology, haematology, cardiovascular treatment, and general healthcare. The facility is expected to treat over 350,000 patients within its first five years and create 3,000 direct jobs, driving intra-African trade in medical services and strengthening local pharmaceutical and healthcare supply chains.
Speaking on the significance of AMCE, Prof. Benedict Oramah stated:
“For too long, Africa has suffered from inadequate healthcare infrastructure, forcing many to seek expensive treatment abroad. AMCE is not just another hospital—it is a bold step towards self-sufficiency in medical care. By providing world-class, lifesaving treatments locally, we are ensuring that access to quality healthcare is not limited by economic barriers. This project will retain medical talent, reduce capital flight, and drive innovation in Africa’s healthcare sector.”
Oramah further emphasized that AMCE is more than just a medical facility—it represents Africa’s ambition to deliver high-quality healthcare services at home.
Building a World-Class Healthcare Ecosystem
Brian Deaver, Chief Executive Officer of AMCE, outlined the long-term vision of the facility:
“AMCE is not just a hospital—it is a comprehensive medical ecosystem that integrates advanced technology, world-class research, and professional training to set a new benchmark for healthcare excellence in Africa. Our goal is to deliver seamless, high-quality care, from early diagnostics to advanced treatment, all within a single facility. This project is a long-term investment in Africa’s health security and a game-changer for the region.”
Government’s Endorsement and Support
The Nigerian government has reiterated its commitment to supporting AMCE, recognizing its potential to transform the country’s healthcare sector.
- Senator Barau Jibrin, Deputy Senate President, described AMCE as a milestone for Nigeria’s healthcare sector, affirming that the government remains committed to fostering policies that encourage medical investment.
- Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, emphasized the economic and social impact of AMCE, highlighting its role in job creation and medical innovation.
Future Expansion Plans
The full development of the AMCE campus will further establish it as a center for excellence in medical education, research, and specialized healthcare services. The second phase of the project will include:
- A second 350-bed hospital
- A medical and nursing school
- A dedicated research center
- Medical residences and lodges for patients and healthcare professionals
By fostering world-class medical training, innovation, and infrastructure, AMCE is shaping the future of healthcare in Africa—ensuring that complex medical cases can be treated at home rather than abroad.
A Vision for a Healthier Africa
As the countdown to AMCE’s June 2025 launch begins, its impact is already evident. With a focus on cutting-edge medical treatments, research, and training, AMCE is not only bridging Africa’s healthcare gaps but also paving the way for a self-sufficient and world-class medical system.
The project marks a turning point in Africa’s healthcare journey, creating an institution that will serve generations to come while significantly reducing the continent’s reliance on overseas medical services.
