Former Kano State Governor and National Leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has stated that any potential defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) would only be considered if clear political guarantees are provided, especially regarding the control of Kano State and the protection of his political structure.
Kwankwaso made the position known on Wednesday at his Miller Road residence in Kano while hosting party leaders and members from Rano and Dawakin Tofa Local Government Areas.
He explained that while he is not opposed to political realignment, he would not make any move that could jeopardise the interests of his supporters or weaken the Kwankwasiyya movement. According to him, talks about joining the APC cannot advance without firm assurances on the future of NNPP lawmakers, party officials and grassroots members who have remained loyal over the years.
The former governor recalled previous political experiences in which his political bloc played a decisive role in forming governments at the federal level, only to be sidelined after power was secured. He warned that such marginalisation must not be repeated.
Kwankwaso noted that, so far, no leader of the APC has offered concrete commitments that would guarantee the preservation of his political structure or ensure that the Kano State government would remain under his influence in the event of any alliance.
“I need clarity before taking any step. Without concrete guarantees, there can be no discussion about defection,” he said.
He reassured his supporters that they remain firmly in the NNPP, stressing that their loyalty would not waver unless any future political engagement is founded on trust, mutual respect and clear safeguards.
