In a strategic move to strengthen corporate governance and risk management practices, the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) has partnered with the Nigerian Capital Market Institute (NCMI) to expand access to globally recognised certification programmes for capital market operators in Nigeria.

The collaboration, announced in Lagos in March 2026, will provide professionals with access to the Internal Control and Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) Certificate programmes developed by the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission (COSO), a globally respected body in financial governance and risk oversight.

Through this initiative, Nigerian finance professionals and businesses will gain the tools needed to design, implement, and monitor robust internal control systems, as well as integrate risk management into strategic decision-making processes.

COSO, a joint initiative of leading accounting and finance organisations, is widely known for advancing best practices in enterprise risk management, internal control, and fraud prevention. Its certification programmes are expected to equip participants with practical skills to navigate an increasingly complex and technology-driven business environment.

Country Director for Nigeria at the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants, Ijeoma Anadozie, described the partnership as a significant step toward improving transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s business landscape.

According to her, access to COSO programmes will help organisations strengthen internal controls, enhance the accuracy of financial reporting, and build investor confidence—key elements for long-term business sustainability and economic growth.

Also speaking, Managing Director of NCMI, Tunde Kamali, emphasized the institute’s commitment to equipping market participants with globally relevant skills.

He noted that deepening expertise in internal control and risk management would empower businesses to operate with greater integrity, accountability, and strategic foresight, while supporting the development of Nigeria’s capital market ecosystem.

Stakeholders believe the partnership will not only improve corporate governance standards but also contribute to Nigeria’s broader vision of sustainable economic growth and global competitiveness.
