The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, has congratulated Nigerians on the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary, saying Nigeria is on the path to becoming a stronger and more prosperous nation.

Yilwatda, in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Information Strategy, Abimbola Tooki, commended Nigerians for their resilience, sacrifices and determination in the face of the country’s economic and security challenges.

He said Nigeria’s journey since independence had been marked by difficulties but also by the ability of its people to overcome adversity and continue moving forward.

The APC chairman said the administration of President Bola Tinubu inherited a difficult economic situation and embarked on fundamental reforms aimed at correcting longstanding structural problems.

He listed the removal of petrol subsidy, foreign exchange reforms, efforts to increase domestic revenue, monetary and fiscal measures, and initiatives to attract investment as some of the key steps taken by the government.

According to him, although the reforms have imposed significant short-term sacrifices on Nigerians, there are signs of improving macroeconomic stability.

Yilwatda cited World Bank figures indicating that Nigeria’s real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 4.2 per cent in the first half of 2026, while foreign reserves stood at $51.9 billion at the end of July.

He also highlighted developments in the energy sector, digital economy, investment and social protection, saying the reforms should ultimately create jobs, expand opportunities and improve living standards.

“We acknowledge the progress that has been recorded and, more importantly, recognise that the work is not finished,” he said.

Yilwatda said the APC remained committed to policies promoting economic growth, national security, social inclusion, investment and institutional development.

He urged Nigerians to participate actively in the democratic process ahead of the 2027 general elections and carefully assess the records and programmes of political parties and candidates.

The APC chairman expressed confidence in Nigeria’s human and natural resources, as well as its entrepreneurial potential, saying the country could emerge stronger if citizens and leaders worked together.

“On this 66th Independence Anniversary, let us celebrate Nigeria, believe in Nigeria and continue to work together for the Nigeria we all desire. Our best days are still ahead of us,” he said.

Yilwatda wished Nigerians a peaceful, prosperous and united Independence Anniversary.
