Residents of a community in the Mowe area of Ogun State were thrown into fear and confusion on November 25, 2023, following the discovery of the lifeless body of a man along the road, after what appeared to have been a violent attack during the night.
The deceased was reportedly on his way to his residence in Mowe when he was allegedly waylaid and attacked by unknown assailants. His body was later found abandoned by the roadside, leaving residents shocked and deeply unsettled.
The incident reportedly occurred during the night when some residents heard sporadic sounds suspected to be gunshots. However, because of the frightening nature of the sounds and the uncertainty surrounding what was happening, no one was willing to come out at that time to investigate or ascertain the cause of the shooting.
It was not until the following morning that the full gravity of the incident began to emerge.
According to information gathered by our correspondent, residents who discovered the body searched the bag found with the deceased in an attempt to establish his identity. The search reportedly led to the discovery of his identification card, ATM card, some cash and a reflective jacket bearing the identity of Skyway Aviation Handling Company (SAHCO), indicating that the deceased was an employee of the company.
His identity card was said to have identified him as Odejide Olanrewaju.
The discovery reportedly raised further questions about the motive behind the killing. His personal belongings, including his ATM card, cash and other items, were reportedly found intact, suggesting that robbery may not have been the immediate explanation for the attack.
For residents, the discovery was more than a tragic incident; it was a chilling reminder of the vulnerability of people returning home after a day’s work.
The quietness of the night, the sound of gunshots that no one dared to investigate and, eventually, the sight of a lifeless man lying by the roadside created an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty in the community.
A source who spoke on the incident said the development had generated considerable panic and anxiety among residents and people living in surrounding areas.
The deceased’s body was later evacuated from the scene to a morgue by local government health officials, according to information obtained by our correspondent.
As residents continue to grapple with the shock of the incident, questions remain unanswered about what transpired on that fateful night, who was responsible for the attack and what could have motivated the killing of a man who, until his death, was simply returning home after his daily activities.
For the community, the memory of the night when gunshots pierced the silence; and the morning when a man’s body was discovered on the road, remains a painful and disturbing reminder of the insecurity that can turn an ordinary journey home into a tragedy.
