Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, a leading engineering construction company, has commenced major road rehabilitation projects in Cotonou, Republic of Benin, marking the start of its ATC 2 highway upgrade contract. Following preliminary groundwork, Julius Berger’s construction teams have now embarked on the first phase of operations, focusing on access roads within the bustling city.
Last week, a visit to Section 1 of ATC 2 revealed significant progress on Roads 7, 9, and 10, particularly on Road 10, a vital route leading to the airport. Despite high traffic volumes, the company’s engineers have expertly maintained a smooth traffic flow while advancing the roadworks.
Site Manager Vodounou Blaise explained that projects in Benin involve a meticulous process, beginning with identifying and relocating network cables before main construction can proceed. “A lot of expertise and patience is required, especially with seasonal weather changes,” Blaise said, noting that efforts to address these complexities remain ongoing.
The rehabilitation includes extensive drainage work, slab installation on adjoining roads, and pavement upgrades with new interlocking stones. Once this groundwork is complete, Julius Berger’s team will begin laying asphalt, enhancing road durability and functionality. According to Blaise, close coordination with a government liaison has fostered strong community relations, ensuring smooth progress.
Work has also started on Road 7, involving the removal of deteriorated pavements and concrete walls as the company continues to demonstrate its commitment to quality and community-focused project management.
