Over the years, preparing a good traditional food has played an important role in defining a woman’s place in many African homes.. In fact, traditional beliefs often hold that a woman’s cooking skills reflect her ability to care for her family especially the traditional fishers .

Therefore, across many communities, mothers have passed down culinary knowledge to their daughters, teaching them how to prepare traditional meals, preserve cultural heritage and nourish their households.

As a result of this, MAGGI, the culinary brand of Nestlé Nigeria, recently reached out to 19,670 women across the South-East through its expanded participation in the 2026 August Meeting celebrations.

BusinessNg newspaper notes that initiative, which spanned five South-East states, involved partnerships with 30 women’s associations and five market activations, more than doubling the brand’s participation compared with the previous year.

The engagement brought together women to celebrate their cultural heritage, share experiences, showcase their cooking skills and learn practical approaches to preparing nutritious meals for their families.

August Meeting, an annual tradition among women in the South-East, serves as an important platform for discussing family welfare, community development and social issues while promoting unity and preserving cultural values.

For MAGGI, the celebrations provided an opportunity to connect with women through food, an essential part of everyday life and a powerful symbol of hospitality, identity and togetherness in African communities.

As part of the programme, the brand organised receptions featuring cooking competitions, music, gifts and appearances by Nollywood actresses Ruby Ojiakor, Blessing Obasi and Blessing Onwukwe, who have roots in the region.

The activities created opportunities for participants to demonstrate their culinary creativity, exchange ideas and explore new ways of preparing familiar local dishes.

Beyond entertainment, nutrition education formed a major part of the celebrations, with practical sessions designed to help women make informed food choices while managing household budgets.

Participants received guidance on the importance of balanced and diverse diets, essential micronutrients such as iron and effective family meal planning. The sessions also highlighted the role fortified foods can play as part of a varied and balanced diet, including MAGGI products fortified with iron.

The nutrition-focused engagement reflects growing efforts to encourage healthier eating habits while recognising the financial realities many Nigerian households face when planning daily meals.

Speaking on the initiative, Funmi Osineye, Category Manager, Culinary, Nestlé Nigeria, described August Meeting as an important expression of women’s contributions to family life, cultural preservation and community development.

“August Meeting is a powerful expression of the role women play in strengthening families, preserving traditions and driving progress in their communities,” Osineye said.

She explained that the initiative was particularly significant as MAGGI marks 60 years in Nigeria, providing an opportunity to celebrate generations of women who have been part of the brand’s journey.

According to her, the celebrations also offered a platform to provide culinary inspiration and practical nutrition knowledge while strengthening the brand’s relationship with consumers.

For many participants, the experience combined cultural celebration with opportunities to learn, connect and appreciate the role of food in bringing communities together.

Blessing Onwukwe, one of the actresses who participated in celebrations in Enugu and Ebonyi states, described the experience as memorable.

“Joining the 2026 August Meeting celebrations in Enugu and Ebonyi States was a wonderful experience. I enjoyed every moment and am truly glad to have had the opportunity to be part of the celebrations in both states,” she said.

Similarly, Christianna Nwibo, an executive of the Catholic Women Organization, Nwofe, Ebonyi State, commended the initiative, noting that participants enjoyed the activities and gifts provided during the celebration.

“We really enjoyed the MAGGI experience at our August Meeting. The food was delicious, the gifts were wonderful, and we had such a good time,” she said.

Nestlé Nigeria said the 2026 engagement builds on MAGGI’s longstanding relationship with Nigerian consumers, particularly women, through food, community participation and cultural platforms.

The company added that the initiative reflects its efforts to remain relevant to younger generations while celebrating the people, food and traditions that have shaped MAGGI’s 60-year journey in Nigeria.

By combining culinary activities, nutrition education and cultural engagement, MAGGI’s participation in the August Meeting celebrations underscores the continuing importance of food as a link between generations, family wellbeing and community identity.

As the brand celebrates six decades in the Nigerian market, the initiative highlights its approach to connecting with women not only through the meals they prepare but also through the traditions, relationships and everyday experiences that make food central to family life.
