Residents and travellers along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway have continued to express deep concern over the persistent wave of kidnappings on the highway, describing the situation as a growing threat to public safety and freedom of movement across the country.
It was reported that on August 17, 2022, panic erupted along a section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway when armed men suspected to be kidnappers reportedly attacked travellers and whisked several people away into a nearby forest.
Eyewitnesses who spoke with our correspondent said the incident occurred when the gunmen suddenly emerged from the bush and blocked the highway, forcing vehicles to a halt. According to those who witnessed the attack, the assailants, armed with dangerous weapons, ordered passengers out of their vehicles before marching them into the forest.
“We heard gunshots and saw people running for safety. The attackers stopped vehicles and took many passengers away,” one eyewitness recounted.
Another resident in the area said the victims were led deep into the forest while motorists and passersby fled in different directions to avoid being caught in the attack.
According to accounts gathered from witnesses and community members, the abducted travellers were allegedly stripped of their belongings, including mobile phones, money, bags, and other valuables before being taken further into the dense forest.
Residents familiar with the area told our correspondent that the victims were reportedly held in remote locations within the forest under harsh conditions, with little or no access to food, medical care, or communication with their families.
The incident, according to locals, was one of several kidnapping cases that have occurred along major highways in Nigeria in recent years. They lamented that criminal gangs have continued to exploit forests and isolated areas to carry out attacks on unsuspecting travellers.
Community leaders and road users expressed concern that kidnapping has become increasingly rampant in many parts of the country, creating fear among citizens and travellers alike.
“The situation is becoming alarming. People are afraid whenever they travel because they do not know what may happen on the road,” a resident told our correspondent.
Observers say the recurring incidents highlight the growing security challenges facing many communities and major transport routes across Nigeria. They stressed the need for sustained efforts by security agencies and relevant authorities to tackle criminal activities and ensure the safety of lives and property.
Meanwhile, security agencies have continued to intensify surveillance, patrols, and intelligence-gathering operations aimed at curbing kidnapping and other violent crimes. Residents have also been urged to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or activities to the appropriate authorities.
As concerns continue to mount, many Nigerians are calling for stronger security measures and lasting solutions to end the menace of kidnapping and restore confidence among travellers on the nation’s highways.
