A shocking revelation has emerged in the Federal Capital Territory High Court, as former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Director of Currency Operations, Ahmed Umar, testified that ex-CBN governor Godwin Emefiele printed a design of the naira that was not approved by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Umar revealed that the design approved by the President included a QR code, which is absent in the current currency in circulation. Additionally, the positioning of the portrait and the number scheme were different from the approved design.
This bombshell accusation comes as Emefiele faces a four-count charge by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for alleged financial misconduct. Emefiele has denied the charges and was granted bail in the sum of N300 million.
This development raises serious questions about the integrity of the CBN’s decision-making processes and the extent of Emefiele’s authority during his tenure as governor. As the case unfolds, Nigerians are eagerly awaiting answers about the circumstances surrounding the printing of the naira and the potential implications for the country’s economy.
