The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has taken a significant step towards entrenching transparency and accountability in its operations by inaugurating an Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU). The unit, comprising 12 members, is tasked with ensuring zero tolerance for unethical acts and corruption within the revenue-collecting agency.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, FIRS Chairman Zacch Adedeji urged the unit members to live above board and reflect the core values of the agency, which abhors corruption. He charged them to bring integrity and transparency to bear in their roles and responsibilities.
The ICPC chairman, represented by Mr. Olusegun Adigun, pledged support for the ACTU members to deliver on their mandate, which includes periodic sensitization of staff on the ills of corruption, examination of systems and processes prone to corruption, and development of a code of ethics for staff.
The Director of the anti-corruption unit, Hajia Sa’adatu Yero, praised Adedeji for his commitment to strengthening the unit and highlighted its critical role in preventing corrupt practices within the service. She noted that the unit has been performing exceedingly well and was recently rated among the best in the country, scoring 79.95% in the 2022 Ethics and Integrity Scorecard survey.
