The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has raised an alarm that Nigerians may be forced to pay as much as N5,000 per litre for petrol if the current trend continues.
This warning was given by the NLC’s spokesman, Benson Upah, in an interview
Upah expressed his concerns about the recent hike in fuel pump price, which he believes is contrary to the agreement reached between the NLC and President Bola Tinubu’s government.
He argued that the government’s claim of restoring subsidy is false, and the sudden increase in pump price from N650 to N1,500 or N2,000 is unjustified.
According to Upah, “Subsidy was never restored at any point in time as they claimed. So, what will inform moving the pump price of PMS from N650 to N1,500 or N2,000? I want to tell you something, what this signals is that Nigerians have not seen the end yet, we may end up paying nothing less than N5,000 per litre for fuel in this country. We hope not to get there, but if we get there, the decision will be left to Nigerians.”
This warning from the NLC has sparked fears among Nigerians, who are already struggling to cope with the high cost of living in the country. The government’s response to this warning is yet to be seen.
