Augustine Eguavoen has stepped down as the interim coach of the Super Eagles, citing the completion of his mandate. Eguavoen, who is also the technical director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), was brought in to lead the team for two games after attempts to hire a substantive head coach failed.
Under his leadership, the Super Eagles won 3-0 against Benin Republic and drew 0-0 against Rwanda in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Eguavoen expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance and thanked the NFF leadership and players for their support.
However, he declined to comment on preparations for the next game against Libya, stating that his mandate had ended. “I have been given a mandate to handle two games. I will want to say I am very pleased with the boys and again, thanks to the NFF leadership and all the boys who supported me. It ends today. I can’t talk about Libya, because I haven’t been told about it.”
Eguavoen’s exit raises questions about the future of the Super Eagles coaching staff and the search for a substantive head coach.
