The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) hosted its annual Judges Workshop in collaboration with the National Judicial Institute (NJI) at the Sheraton Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos. The event focused on “The Role of the Judiciary in Accelerating Digital Transformation in Nigeria.” Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of NCC, addressed the gathering, highlighting the judiciary’s vital role in supporting Nigeria’s push towards a digital economy.
In his welcome speech, Dr. Maida underscored the NCC’s mandate to promote affordable, reliable communication services, and protect telecommunication infrastructure. He emphasized that Nigeria’s transition to a digital economy depends on secure, uninterrupted connectivity. This year’s workshop was designed to provide judges with insights into the evolving landscape of digital technologies and communication practices.
Dr. Maida discussed the July 2024 Presidential Order, which, under the Cybercrimes Act, designates telecommunications infrastructure as Critical National Information Infrastructure. The Order aims to protect essential telecommunication assets from vandalism and unauthorized interference, enhancing security for Nigeria’s digital backbone. This designation prevents entities from tampering with or damaging telecommunications infrastructure without a lawful court order. Dr. Maida acknowledged the judiciary’s role in enforcing these protections, emphasizing that appropriate sanctions are essential for deterring criminal activity.
“The judiciary is not simply an observer of the digital revolution but a key participant,” Dr. Maida stated, underscoring how judges’ adaptation to digital transformation is essential for a robust digital economy. He highlighted areas where the judiciary plays a pivotal role, including protecting digital rights, enforcing online agreements, developing digital jurisprudence, and fostering innovation through stable legal frameworks.
Dr. Maida concluded by expressing optimism that the workshop would advance Nigeria’s digital governance, enhance the judiciary’s engagement with digital issues, and benefit all stakeholders in the communications sector. He also expressed gratitude to the NJI for their partnership, facilitating a collaborative atmosphere for judges and other participants to exchange insights on the future of digital justice in Nigeria.
