If I were Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State, I would have proposed renaming Khadija University, Majia, after a distinguished leader of the state—either former Governor Abubakar Badaru or the current Governor Umar Namadi—rather than adopting a purely institutional name.

This follows the recent resolution of the Jigawa State Executive Council approving the change of the institution’s name from Khadija University, Majia to Jigawa State University of Medical and Applied Health Sciences, pending approval by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

According to the government, the decision came after the acquisition of the university by the Jigawa State Government and aligns with the administration’s commitment to expanding access to higher education in medical and applied health sciences. The initiative is intended to create opportunities for young people in Jigawa State to pursue careers in medicine, healthcare and related fields, while addressing manpower needs in the health sector.

The government further stated that the renaming and strategic repositioning of the university would enhance its profile, attract qualified faculty and students, and strengthen Jigawa State’s contribution to national healthcare development. It also assured stakeholders that all regulatory requirements would be strictly followed and that adequate resources and infrastructure would be provided to ensure quality education.

While these objectives are commendable, my view is that renaming the institution after a respected leader such as Abubakar Badaru University of Medical and Applied Health Sciences or Umar Namadi University of Medical and Applied Health Sciences would carry deeper historical and political significance.

Such a move would help douse growing misunderstandings and distractions created by individuals who, in their quest for relevance or political patronage, sponsor abusive songs and narratives against leaders who have contributed immensely to the progress of the state. Honouring proven leaders through enduring institutions is a way of promoting unity, respect and continuity in governance.

Jigawa State has set a precedent in this regard. Jigawa State University, Kafin Hausa, was renamed Sule Lamido University, Kafin Hausa, in recognition of the contributions of a former governor. It is therefore reasonable to ask: why not Abubakar Badaru or Umar Namadi for the Majia institution?

Renaming the university after one of these leaders would not only immortalize their legacies but also inspire future generations to value leadership, service and development. Ultimately, beyond nomenclature, what matters most is that the institution fulfills its mission of producing skilled health professionals who will serve Jigawa State and Nigeria at large.
