Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has presented Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) to chairmen of the 20 local government areas in the state, in a move aimed at strengthening grassroots governance and improving service delivery.
The presentation took place in Abeokuta during the Christmas festivities and fulfilled the governor’s earlier pledge to support local government administrations with logistics to enhance their operations.
Speaking through the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Ganiyu Hamzat, Governor Abiodun commended the local government chairmen for their efforts in delivering dividends of democracy at the grassroots level. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sustained collaboration with local councils to improve the welfare of residents across the state.
Hamzat noted that the vehicles would enhance the chairmen’s mobility, especially in reaching rural and hard-to-access communities, thereby improving governance and service delivery.
Responding on behalf of the chairmen, the Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Ogun State chapter, Dr. Mrs. Afolasade Adeyemo, expressed appreciation to the governor for the gesture, describing it as timely and commendable.
She praised Governor Abiodun’s achievements across key sectors, including education, housing, healthcare and road infrastructure, adding that the SUVs would significantly support local government officials in carrying out their responsibilities more effectively.
According to her, the vehicles will enable council chairmen to better monitor projects, engage communities and respond promptly to the needs of residents, particularly in rural areas.
