The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Jigawa State Command, has warned motorists against dangerous night driving, reckless overtaking, and overloading following a fatal crash involving two livestock-laden trailers in Shuwarin town.

The accident occurred in the early hours of Monday, May 19, 2026, at about 12:30 a.m. during market day activities in the area.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Jigawa State FRSC Command, Comrade Yahaya Ibrahim Yahaya, said one person lost his life while 19 others sustained varying degrees of injuries in the crash.

According to him, the accident happened at Flat Over, Shuwarin, when two trailers conveying rams and sheep collided while travelling southward ahead of the Sallah festivities.

He explained that the impact of the collision resulted in the death and injury of several animals being transported in the vehicles.

The Sector Commander of RS1.4 Jigawa Sector Command, Corps Commander Umar M. Matazu, visited the scene for an on-the-spot assessment and to supervise the clearance of the obstruction caused by the accident.

Matazu disclosed that preliminary investigations identified dangerous overtaking and excessive speeding at a bend as the major causes of the road traffic crash, which led to a side-by-side collision between the two trailers.

He further revealed that both vehicles were overloaded with livestock and lacked proper restraints for the animals.

According to the FRSC, the 19 injured victims sustained both serious and minor injuries, while one person later died while receiving treatment at the hospital.

The command also confirmed that at least 12 animals, including sheep and rams, died in the accident, while many others sustained injuries.

Both trailers were said to have been badly damaged in the crash.

During his visit to the area, the Sector Commander met with market leaders, vehicle owners, and members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), where he sympathised with the victims and cautioned transport operators to obey traffic regulations.

He urged vehicle owners to ensure that only competent and responsible drivers are entrusted with their vehicles, stressing that overloading and continuous night driving without adequate rest endanger lives and property.

Matazu also highlighted the dangers associated with unsafe haulage of livestock and called on drivers to prioritise safety at all times.

The FRSC assured members of the public that it would intensify enforcement operations and public enlightenment campaigns aimed at promoting safer transportation of livestock along the corridor and reducing road crashes across the state.
