The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Jigawa State Council, has removed the Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, Zangina Mohammed Garba Kura, over his involvement in partisan politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The council announced the decision in a statement signed by the NUJ State Chairman, Comrade Ismail Ibrahim Dutse, and made available to journalists in Dutse.

According to the statement, Kura ceased to qualify to hold office following his reported exit from active journalism and his emergence as a political aspirant under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The union said Kura is currently contesting for the position of member representing Kura/Garin Malam State Constituency in the Kano State House of Assembly ahead of the 2027 elections.

The council explained that the action followed complaints from members and what it described as credible evidence confirming his active participation in partisan politics.

It noted that the development violates provisions of the NUJ Constitution, particularly Articles 5, 7, and 8, which govern professional ethics, disciplinary procedures, and sanctions against actions capable of bringing the union into disrepute.

The statement maintained that active partisan political involvement by a serving union official undermines the neutrality, integrity, and ethical standards expected in journalism practice.

The council further stated that resolutions of the National Executive Council (NEC) of the NUJ require members engaged in partisan politics or political appointments to vacate their union offices in order to preserve the organisation’s non-partisan status.

Consequently, the union directed Kura to immediately hand over all official responsibilities, records, documents, and properties of the Correspondents’ Chapel to the Vice Chairman, pending further directives.

The NUJ warned that failure to comply with the directive would result in his referral to the Ethics and Disciplinary Committee for further action in line with the union’s constitution.

It also advised ministries, departments, agencies, civil society organisations, security agencies, and members of the public to discontinue official dealings with Kura in his capacity as Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel.

The NUJ Jigawa State Council reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, ethical journalism, neutrality, and strict adherence to the constitutional principles guiding the union
